Orso

A Casual Elegance

I’ve been going to Orso since 1986 and it has never let me down. Their excellent food, charming staff, and elegant-yet-informal vibe make it my FAVORITE place to go in the Theatre DIstrict.

Be sure to order some Pizza Bread to start (“Carta di Musica”) with Rosemary of Garlic, or just enjoy their fresh bread and white bean dip.  Their homemade pastas are incredible and rotate regularly — though their signature Rigatoni Bolognese (simmered for hours!)  is a staple  — and my favorite.  The menu also features fish dishes, a free range chicken to-die-for, and occasionally Quail stuffed with sausage and pine nuts — mmmm.  The menu is printed often and dishes change regularly.

There’s a full bar, and limited but effective wine list of predominantly Italian varietals.  Many wines can be ordered by carafe (half or quarter), and of course by the bottle.

Orso was founded by the late Joe Allen, whose namesake restaurant is right next door. His group also owns Bar Centrale, located in the brownstone above Orso — the perfect place for an apertif or post-show nightcap.
