Inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s beloved film, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and a fling with the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But it’s Jenna herself must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.

Brought to life by a groundbreaking, all-female creative team, this irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles (“Brave,” “Love Song”), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) and direction by Tony Award® winner Diane Paulus (Pippin, Finding Neverland).

Waitress started its run with the incredible cast of Tony®️ winner Jessie Mueller (Beautiful), Keala Settle (Greatest Showman), Drew Gehling and Kimiko Glenn. Since then, the show has managed to lure fans of the show back for numerous viewings with its inventive stunt casting, including short stints from TV and singing star Katherine McPhee, Grammy®️ winner Jason Mraz, Today weatherman Al Roker, Academy Award®️ nominee June Squib, NKOTB’s Joey McIntyre, as well as Broadway stars like Erich Bergen Tony®️ winner Gavin Creel, and the show’s composer herself, Sara Bareilles.

Waitress is recommended for ages 13+, and no one under age 4 is allowed in the theatre.

My THEATRE WEEKEND

OUR TAKE

The first thing you should know about Waitress is that you will be craving pie when you leave the show! To induct theatre-goers into the diner setting of the show, the Brooks-Atkinson Theatre cleverly (or cruelly?) pumps the smell of baking pie into the lobby  — so it’s challenging to avoid this sensation of wanting a fresh-baked pie (see our 3 Tips below about how to satisfy this inevitable craving).

But it’s the Sara Bareilles score for Waitress that you’ll be taking “to go” by the time you exit the show. The music is catchy, fun, emotional and ultimately inspiring.

Following the story of a diner waitress looking for a way out of her abusive marriage, the show is filled with a winning set of side characters who add moments of both romance and laugh-out-loud humor, which help punctuate the pathos of the main story-line.

The show will leave you feeling positive about life, ready to take on the world — and looking for the closest diner to talk the show over with your friends. (…although you might prefer to belly-up to the bar at the chic Glass House Tavern next door to the theatre, where the cast is known to frequently hang-out…They also now serve pie!)

Cookbook

You smelled the pies… you saw them on stage… you ate them at intermission — but it’s still not enough?! Now there’s a Waitress cookbook for when you’re home from your Theatre Weekend.
