PRETTY WOMAN is the latest in Broadway's trend of "film-to-stage" projects. While the original was not a musical, the stage show mirrors almost every other aspect of the movie: the plot, the costumes, some sets pieces, and exact lines of dialogue (literally). When I saw the show, this divided the audience into two groups: those who fondly reminisced about the film and were happy to re-visit every aspect of it, and those who fondly reminisced about the film and were somewhat disappointed that the show wasn't a re-invention of the film but a near-reproduction. (Frankly, I fell somewhere in-between.) Andy Karl does a great job as 'Edward' (and thanks to his musical numbers, we do get to understand the character's inner workings a little more than we did in the film). Samantha Barks has the dubious task of taking on the career-launching Julia Roberts role of 'Vivian," and does so admirably by adding her own nuances -- and gorgeous singing voice. The role of 'Kit Deluca' is expanded in the musical and played by Andy Karl's real-life wife, Orfeh, who frankly steals the show with her powerhouse vocals and stage presence. At my performance, the audience was filled with cosy couples and groups of girlfriends out for a night on Broadway: PRETTY WOMAN ticks the box for both groups big-time!
