It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is all grown-up — he’s an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted.  As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

Ron, Hermoine, Draco and other familiar characters also appear in this 8th story in the Harry Potter franchise.
Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had its world premiere in June 2016, at the Palace Theatre in London, where it continues to play to sold-out houses.  It received a record-breaking 9 Olivier Awards including Best New Play and Best Director.

Now, this award-winning team has brought its production to New York, where it won 6 Tony®️ Awards including Best Play and Director.

After under-going a multi-million dollar renovation, Broadway’s historic Lyric Theatre plays host to the show.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is suitable for ages 10+. All persons entering the theatre, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

Please note that children under the age of 15 will not be admitted to the theatre without the accompaniment of an adult.

My THEATRE WEEKEND

OUR TAKE

First, let me admit that I am a Potter-head. I got the books the day they came out, saw the movies in pre-release screenings, and even got to go on-set during filming.

That being said, when I saw this show announced in London, I didn’t have high expectations: it felt like someone was trying to milk some more profits going with one more Potter property.

BOY WAS I WRONG!

I saw both parts in London (*note: the show used to be performed in two parts, but has since been combined into one) and was completely sucked into this 8th story in the series.

It’s not only faithful to the main series (after all, it’s based on the book penned by J.K. Rowling herself), but it’s entertaining, clever, and fun. Everything down to the inventive set changes and the presentation of magic spells is smart: I’m not sure who was having more fun – the kids in the audience, or their parents!

Be sure to check out the Potter merchandise at the theatre which provides a fun memento of the day.
