Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung- and rapped-thru musical about the life of America’s scrappiest Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton. Music, lyrics, and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights), and inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow.
The play debuted off-Broadway in April, 2015, at The Public Theatre, and transferred to Broadway’s Richard Rogers Theatre in August of the same year. It has been playing to sell-out crowds since its opening, and is one of Broadway’s most critically-acclaimed shows. It remains the most sought-after — and one of the most expensive — theatre tickets in New York.
Hamilton is the winner of 11 Tony® Awards including Best Musical, and was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Its also won the Grammy® for Best Musical Theatre Album that year. Off-Broadway, the production won Outstanding Musical at the 2105 Drama Desk awards, and in 2017, its London production won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
Hamilton is suitable for ages 10+, and no one under age 4 will be admitted without an adult present.
My THEATRE WEEKEND
OUR TAKE
There are very few plays in life that live up to their hype, but Hamilton is one of them.
I was lucky enough to see it just as the show hit Broadway, so I had very few pre-conceptions or expectations, and didn’t know the score or the story. Over the 2-1/2 hours (and 46 songs!) of the show, I could not believe what I was seeing and didn’t stop talking/thinking/dreaming about it for weeks afterward. (In fact, five years later, I am still playing songs from the soundtrack at least once a week!)
Simply put: go see it!
