Dear Evan Hansen is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.

A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in.

The winner of six Tony® Awards (including Best Musical) and the Grammy® Award, for Best Musical Theater Album, Dear Evan Hansen features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).

Dear Evan Hansen opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre on December 4, 2016, where it’s broken all box office records and has struck a chord with critics and audiences alike.

Dear Evan Hansen is suitable for ages 12+, and no one under age 4 is admitted.

My THEATRE WEEKEND

OUR TAKE

In 2016, my partner received some advice from Pulitzer Prize winner James Lapine, with whom he’d worked the year prior on the movie adaptation of Into the Woods: “Go see Dear Even Hansen at 2nd Stage when you’re in New York.”

Boy are we glad we did!

The original ‘Evan’ (both before and after its move to Broadway) was Ben Platt, who lit up the stage with his emotional performance, heightened by the moving score from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The story is all-too familiar: a high school student inadvertently inserts himself into the narrative of a tragic high school student’s suicide. Swept up in the lie, it unintentionally brings him closer to the family of the deceased classmate, and gives his life a purpose where there wasn’t one before. It also brings repercussion he’d never imagined.

The show is an honest look at the difficulties of being a modern teenager, exploring the themes of social anxiety, adolescent romance, mental illness and youth suicide. It very deservedly won 7 Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Platt.
