Broadway’s Crowded Tony Season

Spring 2024. Temps are warming, flowers are blooming… and I’m already sweating, wondering how I’m going to finish seeing all 36 eligible Tony Award Broadway Productions!

It’s heart-warming to think of Broadway’s recovery this year when just 3 short years ago, every theatre was still dark because of the Coronavirus pandemic. But now that Broadway appears to be safely out of the economic woods, we theatre geeks feel comfortable resorting to kvetching about the lack of time to see every production (to say nothing of the expense!).

More than a dozen shows are opening in the final days before the April 25th cut-off for eligibility: WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, LEMPIKA, SUFFS, HELL’S KITCHEN, THE GREAT GATSBY, THE HEART OF ROCK AND ROLL, PATRIOTS, THE WIZ, THE WHO’S TOMMY, MARY JANE, UNCLE VANYA, MOTHER PLAY, STEREOPHONIC and late entry ILLINOISE, which opens just under the wire on April 24th.

This is to say nothing of the recent openings on ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, THE OUTSIDERS, THE NOTEBOOK, etc…

Yes, it’s a glorious season on Broadway with no clear-cut front-runners emerging for the Tonys — perhaps it will be a year (unlike the Oscars) with a wide swath of recognition across multiple shows, which I honestly prefer.

One thing is certain: my nights and weekends are spoken for until the end of April, so dear friends: I’ll see ya then!
