I saw this show in its 3rd preview, and it's rare to see a show so polished this early in its run. Janet McTeer is nothing short of spectacular. She commands your attention on stage and yet simultaneously blends into the brilliant ensemble, which includes Broadway veterans Dylan Baker and Paxton Whitehead*. Portraying the real-life, turn-of-the-century actress Sarah Benrhardt, McTeer captures the talent and eccentricities of the woman who was, at the time, the world's most acclaimed performer -- and the first woman to play 'Hamlet' on stage. The script adeptly captures Bernhardt's affair with married playwright Edmond Rostand, the challenges of bringing HAMLET to the stage, and the crazy rumors about Bernhardt which swirled around her at the time (including that she slept in a coffin, and had relations with all the crowned heads of Europe). Though set in 1897, the show's theme feels incredibly timely: a successful female actress who runs her own theatre company finds herself constantly questioned (by men) about her choice of roles both on and off the stage. *(Note: Paxton Whitehead recently left the show citing health reasons, with understudy Tony Carlin stepping in. It is unclear whether Whitehead will return.)
