What if popularity came in a pill? Would you take it, no questions asked? In Be More Chill, achieving the “perfect life” is now possible thanks to some mysterious new technology—but it comes at a cost that’s not as easy to swallow. What could possibly go wrong?

Blending the contemporary with retro sci-fi, this thrillingly exciting, comically subversive, and deeply felt new musical takes on the competing voices in all of our heads. And ultimately proves, there’s never been a better time in history to be yourself—especially if you’re a loser…geek…or whatever.

The entire Off-Broadway company moves to Broadway, led by Will Roland, Michael Salazar, Stephanie Hsu and Jason Tam.

With Music and Lyrics by Joe Iconis, and the Book by Joe Tazcz based on a novel by Ned Vizzini. Stephen Brackett directing,

Be More Chill is recommended for ages 12+, and no one under age 4 will be permitted in the theatre.

OUR TAKE

Be More Chill is already a huge hit having played a sold-out and extended run Off-Broadway in the summer of 2018. I was lucky enough to get last-minute tickets (literally nabbing matinée seats at 10pm the night before I saw it!) during its run at the Pershing Square Signature Center on 42nd Street — and my feelings for the show can be summed up in a word: LOVE! The show is retro while being contemporary, silly while addressing serious teenage problems (like bullying, social status, and weight struggles), and is all wrapped in a fresh, clever soundtrack with sharp choreography by Chase Brock.

In this period of derivative Broadway musicals (the endless film-to-stage adaptations), it was thrilling to see something entirely new (*even though it’s technically based on a YA novel). The mostly 20-something audience was SO into the show — and for good reason: it was 2-and-a-half hours of pure fun. (Also, Be More Chill is already an online sensation with a whopping 200+ million streams of its soundtrack to date! No wonder everyone knew the lyrics and beats of the show!)

Go see it! Take your teen or tween with you as they’ll totally relate to the story (or take your 40+ year-old partner, like I did, who enjoyed it just as much as those half his age).
